Lib Dems Call For Urgent Repairs to Borough Roads

24 Jun 2002

Liberal Democrats on Bedford Borough Council Environment Policy Review and Development committee last week successfully proposed a motion calling for the County Council to release it's road repair backlog list.

Currently the County Council is responsible for maintaining the towns roads through the Highways Agency Agreement. However funding is falling far short of the level required for their general upkeep.

Speaking after last Thursdays meeting environment spokesperson, Cllr Shirley McKay commented:

"Many of the roads [in the borough] are in an appalling state. Some roads haven't been resurfaced in over 30 years. Perhaps the County Council wants to upgrade their status to antique! We know there is a backlog but something needs to be done to stop Bedford's roads falling into further disrepair. We are now calling upon the council to release details of exactly how bad the situation is. Once we know that we can push the county council to introduce a programme of repairs that will see Bedford's roads finally brought back to an acceptable standard."
