Bedford Borough Liberal Democrats are demanding that real powers are put in the hands of local communities under a new Bedford Borough Unitary Authority. The Lib Dems are calling for a radical overhaul of democracy in the Borough to ensure that local residents have genuine power over local matters.

Commenting on the issue, Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Michael Headley said:

"A drive to devolve power from the Town Hall and to empower our local communities must be central to the creation of the new authority.'

"The establishment of a new authority for Bedford Borough provides a wonderful opportunity to boost democracy at all levels, and to put real powers in the hands of local communities. Liberal Democrats on the council will be working hard to ensure that this is done.'

"It is vital that all those involved in the process of establishing the new authority are not afraid to give power back to communities, and are prepared to see local decisions made locally. After all, it is local communities who know what is best for their area!"
