Lib Dems Rubbish County Plans To Permit Waste

Lib Dems on Bedford Borough Council have branded the new scheme which will turn the county's tidy tips into a permit only zone as rubbish.

The plan due to come into effect in April of this year is intended to bring a halt to the use of tidy tips by traders dumping non-household waste. Now users of the tip will need to collect a permit before being granted entry to the site, with new permits required at least every thirty-one days. However the Liberal Democrats believe the measures being introduced will just discourage ordinary householders from using the sites, leading to easier alternatives such as fly tipping increasing.

Speaking on the issue Lib Dem Environment Spokesperson Christine McHugh said:

" This is supposed to be a service for local people but these measures will just make it harder for local people to use the sites. Now if you want to get rid of your rubbish at the tip you'll have to pick up a permit. If you need to go again more than a month later you'll need another, and don't even think about it if your trailer has more than three wheels! This is just ludicrous. It is putting an unwanted layer of bureaucracy in the way of people trying to tidy their homes. For the sake of a few wrong doers 100's are being inconvenienced. This can't be the best scheme. It's just the County Council trying to drop its responsibility. We want to see measures encouraging people to dispose of their waste ethically and environmentally not added bureaucracy. This will just discourage people.

It's a real double whammy what with the Mayor cutting funding for the rural skips and scrapping the free bulky waste collection and things look very serious indeed. With decisions like these residents can be forgiven for thinking the message is recycle less not more."
