Lib Dems 'Three Times As Green' As Other Parties

13 Sep 2007

The Liberal Democrats have been judged the greenest of the three main political parties in an audit by Britain's environmental groups.

The audit was carried out by a group of major environmental organisations, including Friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, the National Trust, the RSPB, the Woodland Trust and WWF-UK.

The report scored the parties on a traffic light system, with "green lights" awarded according to how green each party's policies were. The Conservatives got no green lights, Labour just one and the Liberal Democrats 3.

Commenting on the issue, Liberal Democrat Shadow Defra Secretary, Chris Huhne MP said:

"The Liberal Democrats continue to set the green standard that other parties need to meet. We are three times as green as the Labour Party, and streets ahead of the Tories. We have an ambitious and realistic objective for a zero-carbon Britain, tackling carbon emissions from every part of the economy: transport, housing, offices and factories.'

"Despite all their warm words, it is telling that the Tories fail to get a single green light. They are still divided between those like John Gummer who want to go green and those like John Redwood who do not. While the other parties may talk green, only the Lib Dems mean it.'
