Liberal Democrat Balanced Budget

27 Feb 2001

Local Liberal Democrats issued their Budget plans for the Borough Council Today. They plan to spend less on the Councillors and more on the Council-Tax Payers.

"Our budget clearly and unequivocally places the interests of the people of this borough first!" said Liberal Democrat Leader Michael Headley. "Our plan would save £73,000 from the members allowances budget. Money that can be better spent on providing services for the people of Bedford. The Liberal Democrat Plans include extra money for dealing with the problem of abandoned cars, improvements to local shopping parades, help for the boroughs older residents to make sure their homes are warm next winter, better maintenance of the borough's trees, free museum entry and a new bus service to link the town centre with the Train station and Aspects Park and Ride. We can do all of this without adding to the Council Tax increase for next year."

"This is an ingenious and inventive way of solving a problem. The Liberal Democrat group have answered the question of how to increasing service provision without sending the Council Tax through the roof." Said Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Dan Rogerson "We have added money into services by taking it out of Councillor's pockets. Then by looking carefully at the budget we have spotted ways to spend the money, which is there, in a more sensible way. Moving the money for poopscoop and the extra funds for Abandoned cars into the ongoing side of the budget not only acknowledges that those problems will not going to go away at the end of the next financial year. But it also frees up money to improve local shopping parades and to help make sure that people get the money they are entitled to for keeping their homes warm next winter. We also found enough money to fund Lazy Sunday again."
