Liberal Democrat Group Pays Tribute to Long-Serving Councillor
After nearly 20 years of service representing the people of Goldington, Liberal Democrat Cllr Sylvia Gillard has announced that she will be standing down after this year's election.
Sylvia was first elected to the Borough Council in 1987 to 1991, during which time she sat on a number of committees, did superb work on behalf of her residents and also served as the ceremonial Mayor. She was then elected to the County Council from 2001 to 2009, and then re-joined the Borough Council as a member of the new unitary authority in 2009.
Cllr Sylvia Gillard said "It has been an honour to serve as Councillor for Goldington. I am very grateful for all the support I've had from the local community and from my colleagues at the Council. I have been lucky enough to see many of the things we've worked for come to fruition. These include the transformation of Church Lane, also known as Goldington Square, with new shops and the recently opened doctors surgery, a new crossing at Goldington Green and the ongoing investment in our roads, footpaths, playgrounds and bus stops."
Liberal Democrat Group Leader Cllr Wendy Rider said "I would like to express the Group's thanks to Cllr Gillard for all her hard work over her many years of service, and wish her the best of luck for the future. Sylvia has served Goldington for many years, as both a Borough and County councillor and notably she has served as both Mayor under the old system and as Speaker under the new system with an elected Mayor. It is a well-earned retirement from the Council."
