LibraryPlus success
The Council's LibraryPlus digital model launched in 2017 is proving to be a success in the three libraries where it was introduced - Bedford Central Library, Bromham Library and Wootton Library. Bedford Borough has a higher rate of book issues than the average for England with 3,572 issues per 1,000 population (England's average is 2,990).
Under the Mayor Dave Hodgson and the Liberal Democrats, the Council have maintained modern and accessible library buildings and encouraged community participation in delivery of services. The libraries using LibraryPlus now provide greater choice and flexibility including extended opening hours through use of self-service hours.
There have been changes to opening hours at Kempston Library and Putnoe Library, but this does not appear to have had a major impact on library users. Whilst all Bedford Borough Council's libraries have remained open, other councils, such as Conservative-run Northamptonshire, have had to close libraries with 127 closing last year.
Mayor Dave Hodgson and the Liberal Democrats have also saved the Mobile Library and Library Link despite government cuts. No village or care home has lost its service.
