Litter problems worsen under Tories

Cllr Leigh Coombs (Shortstown) raised the issue of worsening litter at Full Council on Wednesday 26th February, asking the Mayor why the situation has got so bad. The Mayor could not give reasons and was unable to confirm when the next clean ups would be.
Cllr Coombs asked, "Residents have approached me with concerns about the severe litter accumulation along the A421. As the southern gateway to Bedford, this is the first impression visitors and potential investors get of our town, and right now, it’s an eyesore. Can the Mayor confirm exactly when the next clean-up is scheduled? And more importantly, with this administration planning to cut £165,000 from the budget for grounds maintenance and street cleansing, is this level of decline what residents and visitors should now expect as the new normal for our town’s key entry points?"
Notes:
National Highways has recognised how bad the situation has become, stating:
“We too have noticed that the buildup in places has become quite severe. Unfortunately, we are a little powerless when it comes to this as the responsibility lies with Bedford Borough Council.”
