River Festival 2022

This summer Bedford Borough has hosted a large number of cultural activities that have celebrated the vibrant customs and traditions of residents who live here. From the Queen's Platinum Jubilee to the return of Bedford River Festival, there was something for everyone this summer!

In June the whole Borough was involved in celebrating the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. There were some fantastic decorations and beacons lit across the Borough in honour of Her Majesty. Thousands of residents got together to celebrate with friends and neighbours at almost 100 street parties.

Another huge event on the Bedford Borough calendar was the return of Bedford River Festival after 4 years. Hundreds of thousands of people attended from across the country to see the boat parades, raft races and a huge variety of music. There were some new additions this year with the Bands on the Bridge, BBC Music Introducing Stage and the Festival of Motoring down the High Street.

Throughout the summer there have been lots of other events and activities happening. The Bedford Flea Market has made several appearances in the Town Centre, showcasing the best of the Borough's art and food, this was in additional to the regular Charter Marker in Bedford and the Kempston Market. We have also seen the return of Music in the Meadows with bands performing at the bandstand in Mill Meadows every Sunday throughout August. The Council is also supporting the Asian Festival that will take place this coming Sunday (28th August) in Bedford town Centre.

The Council have been involved in celebrations of nationally significant days, including the anniversaries of Jamaica's, Pakistan's and India's Independence Days and will be celebrating the anniversary of Ukraine Independence Day on 24th August.

There was also an Armed Forces Day event and parade to commemorate and celebrate all those who have and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. In September we will be marking the 999 Emergency Services Day at Borough Hall.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said "It's fantastic that we have managed to have so many events this summer, especially after the difficulties of the last two years. I want to say a big thank you to all the people involved in organising these events. It's been great to see the variety of celebrations we have hosted and I'm looking forward to attending even more in the future."
