Looking Back at Last Weekend's Torch Relay in Bedford Borough - Weather Fails to Dampen Spirits

Olympic Torch Relay Crowds Along the Embankment in Bedford
This photo gives an impression of the size of the crowds which welcomed the Olympic Torch Relay in Bedford Borough, not just here along the Embankment but right along the route

The size of the crowds lining the streets of the torch relay in Bedford and Cotton End really was remarkable. Glancing at some of the footage of the relay in other towns and cities, I haven't seen such crowds out right along the route, and that's not to mention the enthusiasm on show. People of all ages came out to enjoy a real family occasion, with in many cases three generations enjoying the spectacle together. What is most remarkable, perhaps, is the fact that it was all in spite of some pretty dreadful weather, especially early on the Sunday morning when people will have been heading out. If the weather depleted the numbers at all, it certainly wasn't noticeable, with huge crowds not just along the Embankment and in Bedford town centre but all along the route.

The children's relay which I had the honour of starting beforehand was great fun, and there were all sorts of associated events going on for people to enjoy, including in some of the pubs and restaurants. I was lucky enough to be involved in the unveiling of the Harold Abrahams Heritage Plaque at the Rutland Road birthplace of the 'Chariots of Fire' Olympic Hero later on in the day, and I intend to upload a photo or two from that event on here shortly.

It's a cliché, of course, but it was a once in a lifetime experience for most, and yet more evidence that Bedford knows how to enjoy itself when these big occasions come along! It bodes well for other exciting events coming up thick and fast in Bedford, such as the River Festival and then the Olympic Live Site at the Athletics Stadium. While no doubt they will still be a success if the weather continues to refuse to do as it should, some drier weather really wouldn't go amiss!
