Mayor Dave Hodgson visit to Mark Rutherford to see new STEM teaching block

This morning I visited Mark Rutherford School, for the opening of the STEM teaching block.

The new centre of excellence comprises of seven classrooms and a lecture theatre and will inspire a whole generation of young people in Bedfordshire to pursue STEM subjects and help grow the next generation of engineers, scientists and technologists.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are crucial to the future needs of the UK and the employability of today's students in the job market going forward.

There were are a number of activities including building a propeller-powered car and a Medical Mavericks workshop showing practical uses of STEM subjects in real world settings.

Mark Rutherford School has been one of the leaders in STEM locally for many years with projects like the Flying Machines back in 2014/15, launching the Smarties Club in 2017/18 and promoting women in science and engineering consistently over the years.

This new centre of excellence will help Mark Rutherford School, the students and the local community take STEM to the next level.
