Mayor Dave Announces Series of Road Junction Upgrades Across Bedford

Mayor Dave Hodgson has announced another three significant upgrades to road junctions across Bedford. Each of the upgrades are designed help to tackle congestion at well-known hotspots, improve the day-to-day experience of local road users, and help get traffic moving across Bedford.

The works are as follows:

• On Goldington Green, mini roundabouts will be installed to make it easier for traffic to enter and leave Goldington Road, which is a notorious and longstanding difficulty for motorists
• Traffic will able to enter River Street car park from Greyfriars, so motorists heading there from that side of town will no longer have to drive across the town centre and around St Paul's Square, saving them time and cutting congestion.
• At Rope Walk, traffic lights will be installed which will mean traffic leaving St John's retail park can turn right and will not add to the congestion at Wilmer's Corner roundabout, where Rope Walk/Ampthill Road/London Road etc meet, to turn around.

These improvements will help to tackle congestion at these well-known hotspots across our town, help cut down on unnecessary traffic movements on St Paul's Square and Rope Walk, and get traffic moving.

These works join the 'Transporting Bedford 2020' project, which is targeting major junctions across the Borough to improve traffic flow. As part of this project, funded jointly by Bedford Borough Council and through SEMLEP's Local Growth Fund, work has already begun on Manton Lane to widen the road and increase capacity for all road users, and tackle congestion.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said "Transporting Bedford 2020 is the largest ever investment in our town's roads to help get traffic moving. These new sites we are upgrading are all well-known as difficult junctions and we are again targeting work to make a real difference to people's day-to-day lives.'

"This is in addition to major investments in the High Street and St Paul's Square, Britannia Road, Ampthill Road, Bromham Road and Manton Lane under this comprehensive decongestion programme."
