Mayor Dave Hodgson has welcomed the rapid progress being made at St Mary's Car Park, the new public surface car park being built on the south side of the river in Bedford town centre.

The new car park is accessed between Borough Hall and Bedford College on Cauldwell Street in Bedford, and is just a short walk over the new pedestrian bridge from Riverside Bedford and the town centre. It is due to open in the summer, providing another parking option and giving those travelling by car from the south an alternative which means they will not need to cross the river and add to the traffic in the town centre.

Mayor Dave posted a photo of the site on Facebook, along with the following comments:

"It's good to see such rapid progress being made on the new public car park we're opening on the south side of the river, which from this summer will provide another parking option for Riverside Bedford and the town centre.'

"As well as giving people another parking option and another alternative for those who prefer 'surface' parking to multi-storeys, St Mary's Car Park will keep traffic out of the town centre by giving people travelling from the south side of town an option to park without driving across the river.'

"We want to support shoppers and local traders by making it as convenient as possible to park in Bedford town centre. Alongside the parking charge freeze this year and the ongoing free parking deals, the new CCTV in multi-storeys plus the new signage with 'real-time' information on spaces, this extension of parking options is intended to help do just that."
