Mayor Dave's Rallying Cry Against Government's 'Wildly Excessive' Housing Target for Bedford Borough
Mayor Dave Hodgson has slammed the government's proposal to impose a housebuilding target on Bedford Borough which would increase the amount of building needed at new sites by a massive 82%.
A consultation on the government's proposal to impose a standard formula from Westminster for new housing development concludes at 11.45pm on Thursday 9th November, and Mayor Dave has issued the following rallying cry on his Facebook page for people to have their say against the massively out-of-scale impact this would have on Bedford Borough and its infrastructure:
"I was shocked by the government's proposed new housebuilding target for Bedford Borough, which would raise the amount of building needed at new sites by a massive 82%.
The Conservative government wants to impose a standard formula from Westminster on all local areas. The effect here would require a monstrous increase in local development, over and above our existing target based on local need.
It would mean that instead of allocating new sites for 8,103 additional houses between now and 2035, extra land for another 6,620 houses on top of that would be needed.
I have never been against building the homes that allow people to live in suitable housing for themselves and their families. However, growth must be sustainable, and the government's huge increase simply couldn't be.
