Christmas Lights on The Embankment, Bedford

Mayor Dave's latest montly column for the Bedford Times and Citizen newspaper has a festive theme, including the events taking place around the Borough in the run-up to Christmas, Dave's visit to thank the postal workers for their efforts at this time of year and a few words on support for good causes at a time at which we think of those in need. Here's the full text of the piece:

"Christmas is well and truly upon us, and recent weeks have seen all sorts of festive events taking place across Bedford Borough. In our rural and urban communities, people have been coming together to enjoy Christmas fairs, carol concerts, charity events and much more.

Meanwhile, the Council has put on a range of events to make sure Bedford is the place to be this Christmas. The lights switch-on saw thousands of local residents, in particular families with children, braving the chilly conditions to enjoy a spectacular show and festive atmosphere. The Bedford Christmas Fair last weekend saw huge numbers of people taking advantage of our year-round free parking at weekends to visit the town centre.

I visited the Royal Mail Bedford Delivery Office in the midst of the Christmas rush to thank the staff for their efforts at this time of year. It was great to meet the team, many of whom have several decades' experience. I can reassure you that despite the huge volume of post things were well under control, but for those who haven't sent their cards yet, a reminder that the last posting dates are very much upon us!

Christmas is of course a time when we remember those less fortunate than ourselves. I recently did a short volunteer shift at a Bedford Foodbank Collection at a local supermarket, and was truly amazed at the extent of people's generosity towards those in need, especially when household budgets can be so tight at this time of year.

Bedford Foodbank is one of the three current Mayor's Charities, alongside Autism Bedfordshire and Bedford Sea Cadets. I know that they, along with the many other excellent local charities, really do appreciate any contributions people can make during the festive season and throughout the year.

I wish you and your loved ones a very happy, healthy and peaceful Christmas"
