Mayor Dave Hodgson has offered his thanks to all of the volunteers at The Higgins Bedford, with the number of people giving their time to the art gallery and museum tripling since January.

The announcement of the additional volunteer numbers coincided with Volunteers' Week, an annual national celebration of the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK, organised by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations.

In January, 20 volunteers at The Higgins Bedford were contributing around 100 hours a month. This has now grown to a team of over 60 volunteers, including several work experience students, contributing 500 hours every month!

Commenting, Mayor Dave said: "I want to offer my thanks to all of those who offer their time, energy and talents to The Higgins Bedford. They represent the strong culture of volunteering which runs right through Bedford Borough and helps to make our communities great places to live."

Volunteers at The Higgins are engaged in a number of different areas at the museum including welcoming visitors, helping out at events, research, promotion, administration, and community engagement. The team's youngest member is just 13, while the oldest is in their eighties!

Liberal Democrat Councillor Sarah Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder of Leisure and Culture, added: "By giving your time at The Higgins Bedford you are able to support and connect with your local community and all those that visit the museum. As well as this, volunteering can benefit you, dedicating your time as a volunteer helps you make new friends; learn new skills; and gain valuable experience."

The Higgins Bedford is showcasing the volunteer team on its website to illustrate the roles available to anyone interested in joining.

In addition, Bedford College's HE Performing Arts Course Manager Sean Doyle and two of his students are creating a short film to promote the benefits of volunteering at The Higgins Bedford, which will be premiered at the Castle Quay Weekender on 18th and 19th June.
