Figures released this week by a leading children's charity reveal that 12,600 children in Bedford Borough live in families which face a cut in their income due to the Government's callous cuts to tax credits.

The Children's Society has accompanied the release of the shocking figures with a call for the Government to abandon the planned cuts. Mayor Dave Hodgson has echoed that call, and slammed the government for planning huge cuts in the income of households with people working hard to make ends meet.

Commenting, Mayor Dave said: "As these figures confirm, the Government's tax credit cuts will force children into poverty on a massive scale. The changes will punish people on low pay for working hard, and will simply force many people out of employment altogether.'

"This is of course bad for local business, too, and it will be absolutely dreadful for local families who are striving to make ends meet. If the government cared at all about fairness and making work pay, they would abandon these changes altogether."
