McHugh launch targets the Best!

13 Sep 2002

The Liberal Democrats will offically launch Christine McHugh's Campaign for Mayor on Monday. Lembit Opik MP for Montgomeryshire will speak at the Launch.

Christine and Lembit will be launching the Manifesto - the Best for Bedford - in which Christine calls for Zero Tolerance of Neglect, Zero Council Tax rise and Zero Waste.

Christine said about her plans:

"With its reserves in the bank and with good leadership, Bedford Borough can achieve targets that will bring real, visible benefits to local residents. The Liberal Democrats are ambitious for Bedford, and see three key aims for Bedford over the coming months and years. We've identified three key areas that we will target as priorities for achievement - some which will generate fast "quick win" results for local council tax payers, and some which are essential to our towns future environmental health, but which will take longer to achieve. These are the Three Zeros."

"We need to look into every decision to get the Best for Bedford drawing on best practice from other councils and towns. The question should no longer be is this better than what we've currently got, but is it the best we can achieve? Not just better - let's aim for the Best."

Lembit Opik said:

"The Liberal Democrats were second in terms of votes across the Borough to the Conservative Party in the May Local Elections. The Mayoral Election is between the Christine and the Conservatives."
