National Allotments Week: Lib Dems champion green spaces
During National Allotments Week, Newnham Liberal Democrat Councillors Hilde Hendrickx and Jake Sampson speak about the importance of the natural environment and green spaces across the Borough.
Councillor Sampson said "I love walking my dogs through Newnham Allotments. It's fantastic to see all the little plots so full of life with a huge variety of plants and food being grown. Green spaces like this are so beneficial for the environment and our own mental health."
Newnham Avenue Allotments is one of three allotment sites the Council owns. In total the Council hires out over 300 plots to keen gardeners across the Borough. Councillor Hendrickx said "We have seen the how important nature is when we were in lockdown last year. I'm very pleased that the Council has clearly made protecting the environment a key priority. Our parks continue to be award winning and we've planted thousands of trees in the last year alone. I want to say a big thank you to all the officers who make our Borough such a beautiful place to live."
In its Corporate Plan, Bedford Borough Council has made enriching the local environment one of its priorities. In the last planting season the Council has been involved in the planting of over 30,000 trees. This will make a substantial impact on the lives of future generations in terms of carbon reduction and protection of the natural environment. Four of the Borough's parks (Addison Howard Park, Bedford Park, Harrold-Odell Country Park and Priory Country Park) have also retained their prestigious Green Flag Award yet again.
