New Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway Consortium - Honoured to be First Chair and Looking Forward to Task Ahead

30 May 2010

I am delighted to have been elected as the first Chair of the new Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterway Consortium. Following the sterling work of the volunteer-run Bedford and Milton Keynes Waterways Trust in taking the project to a stage beyond the capabilities of a charitable trust, I am looking forward to working with the ten other partners who join Bedford Borough Council in working jointly to take make further progress.

Clearly the delivery of the canal is very much a long-term goal. However, all progress we make, for example in securing the route and protecting it from development, accessing external funding or complementing other environmental projects along the route will have real benefits for local communities. It will bring new leisure opportunities, economic growth and the protection and enhancement of the local environment.
