The opening of a new 'jobs hub' in Bedford Town Centre is now not far away, with refurbishment work now underway on the premises in Greyfriars. This is pioneering new scheme, which we have pursued through the 'Bedford Borough Partnership Board' (the partnership of local public sector bodies, which I co-chair), will offer a unique approach to supporting people into work, training and business. The Hub is also being supported by Job Centre Plus, and will offer real support to people in an informal environment.

Supporting people into work is crucially important, especially in the current climate, and that's why we're working so hard to attract new businesses to Bedford Borough and support others to succeed and to grow here. Alongside that approach, the availability of real help in the heart of Bedford in an informal environment, for unemployed residents of all ages, will represent a positive step in the task of helping tackle unemployment locally. It will also help develop skills locally and support increased enterprise, both of which are key to promoting the economic growth we all want to see.

Some of the services on offer at the Jobs Hub include:

  • Advice about education and training options, including apprenticeships
  • Help with job skills including CV writing, job applications and interview skills
  • Access to job vacancies
  • Appointments with training providers
  • Business start-up workshops and enterprise coaching
  • Help with volunteering opportunities
  • Signposting to other services to help with specific issues, such as housing, health, benefit or debt advice

I look forward to the opening of the Hub, providing the above support and more in the heart of town.
