Work underway at Wixams Railway Station

The long-awaited new railway station at Wixams was approved unanimously by Bedford Borough Council's Planning Committee last night. This is a big step forward on the journey to getting the new station up and running for local residents.

The delivery of Wixams station supports the Council's sustainability strategy to improve rail infrastructure and interconnectivity across the Borough and beyond. A railway station with regular services has the potential to reduce vehicle trips on the A6 which in itself has the potential to reduce local congestion, improve air pollution and provide opportunities for active travel.

The plans include a single storey station building, a public car park and a public transport interchange including an access road, bus stops, taxi bays, cycle storage and a public square. There will also be a number of EV charging units.

Rail Portfolio Holder Councillor Michael Headley said "This is a big step forward in the delivery process for this station. I'm very pleased with the progress that we've made since the Council became involved. The station will provide residents with better and more sustainable transport links and reduce the need for car journeys."

Chair of Planning Committee, Councillor Jon Abbott said "Thank you to everyone who gave their views on this application. The plans for the station are well thought through and consider all parties who will be impacted by the station including local residents, businesses and railway users. I am very pleased that it was passed with unanimous support from the committee."
