Prioritising the environment means hitting countries where it hurts

The Liberal Democrats have called on the Brazilian government to act urgently to stop the widespread fires that are destroying the Amazon rainforest.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Environment Secretary Wera Hobhouse said "We've all seen the pictures, the lungs of the earth are being systematically destroyed by the populist government in Brazil. We desperately need to see action to improve the situation. Making the environment and climate change a key priority across the world means hitting some countries where it hurts - right in their pockets. If we end the EU-Brazilian trade deal, it will show that we are taking climate change seriously across the globe, and that others should follow."
