Public Meeting demanded over Bus Cuts Furore

The future looks very bleak for Bus users in the borough following revelations that Bus Company Stagecoach is set to decimate current services.

Liberal Democrats in the borough have demanded a public meeting be held to explain to local people exactly why these cuts have to be made after Stagecoach decided it is to axe key services across the borough leaving whole areas stranded with no local bus service. In a letter sent to Stagecoach MD Inglis Lyon, Lib Dems demand that a meeting take place in Bedford which gives the public and stagecoach a chance to have their say.

Speaking on the issue Cllr Michael Headley said:

"We've heard that Stagecoach is planning a massive cull of local bus services on November the third. This means suddenly loyal passengers who use the services everyday to get to work, to school, to shop or visit friends will be dealt a huge kick in the teeth as they are left stranded in these areas."

"We are demanding that Stagecoach sit down face to face with local people and explain exactly what these cuts will mean and why they are taking place. We think local people should have their say. It is disgraceful that with only a couple of weeks to go stagecoach have been reluctant to give out any details. What they are planning are huge cuts. Services to the rural areas will be hardest hit but even urban services like the 106 and 107 look set to miss out whole areas around Black Tom, Fosterhill Road and Rowallan Drive."

"Let's be clear these changes have nothing to do with improving services and everything to do with profit making. Bus users have a right to know what these changes are going to mean and why Stagecoach have decided to abandon them."
