Remembrance Events Across the Borough - A Chance to Pay Tribute
Remembrance events across Bedford Borough are always tremendously well attended and are, without, exception, deeply moving experiences. I was honoured to be invited to lay a wreath on behalf of the council at the Remembrance service of the Scots Society of St Andrew, Bedford last Sunday at Bedford Cemetery, Foster Hill Road.
The Scots Society of St Andrew, Bedford was formed in 1931 to promote Scottish Culture and Customs, and the service held at the cemetery was a fitting tribute to those who gave their lives on behalf of generations to come. The photo here was taken at the service, and includes the standard bearers, who were excellent as ever.
This weekend, on Remembrance Sunday, there will of course be services taking place in communities across the Borough. I will be at the Remembrance Day Parade and wreath laying at the Embankment in Bedford in the morning at 10:40am, and then at the Kempston Remembrance Service in the afternoon, which begins at Kempston East Methodist Church at 2:30pm, before moving on to the Memorial.
Then on Monday, Armistice Day, we will hold the annual remembrance service in the Mayor's Parlour, which is unique in having its own war memorial. This is followed by the Royal British Legion's Remembrance ceremony at Boots Corner in the town centre, including the silence at 11am. Ex-service Associations will be represented and Standards paraded. The Last Post will signal the beginning of the two minutes silence and Reveille will signal its end. This service is always extremely well supported, with large crowds out in town paying their respects as one to fallen soldiers, and no doubt that will be the case once again on Monday
