Revolution in Sunday Bus Services for Bedford!

29 Nov 2010

Please excuse the dramatic language, but the new bus services we are providing across Bedford and Kempston are at the very least a radical improvement for buses on Sunday, if not a full-blown revolution! With a one-off contribution of £48,000, we are enabling the full network of services which run from Monday to Saturday across the urban and suburban area to run on a Sunday. They will run, as a minimum, at least hourly. This is less frequent than Monday to Saturday to begin with, but it will be a major boost for bus users who tell me that the current two-hourly (at most) services, on routes which no-one seems to know and for which there is little information at shelters or elsewhere, are a major barrier to bus use on a Sunday.

Local residents have also told me that they find existing, infrequent Sunday bus services to be often confusing, mainly because the routes are different from the usual weekday services. Our new programme of Sunday buses will resolve that and provide a service local residents want.

Running the usual Monday to Saturday routes on a Sunday is a major step in providing clarity for bus users, who will now be able to use the routes they know seven days a week.

This overhaul of Sunday buses is part of our drive to protect the local and wider environment with real action, supporting residents to use sustainable transport. It also furthers our aim of supporting a thriving town centre during these difficult economic times by helping more people to access it, including in the run-up to Christmas.
