Sainsbury's Closure Condemned

27 Feb 2001

Commenting on the closure of the Town Centre Sainsbury's Lib Dem Parliamentary Spokesman for Bedford Michael Headley, has condemned Sainsbury's move and said;

"This is devastating news for many Bedford people who don't have access to a car. I have already written to Sainsbury's calling on them to think again. They have a responsibility to this town - they make money from their Clapham Road store and they should honour their commitment to their long standing customers in the town centre."

"I am convinced that the right type of supermarket is viable here. If Sainsbury's aren't up to the challenge one of their competitors should be encouraged to step in with a modern town centre store. There are a whole range of people who don't want to or aren't able to shop out of town. For these people Sainsbury's must think again."

Michael Headley has written to Sainsbury's calling on them to stop and think again about their proposals.
