Save Energy, Save Money!
With the weather starting to become colder, Bedford Borough Council will be providing help and guidance to residents on how to keep warm, and lower their energy bills.
The Council's Sustainability Team, in partnership with Bedford & District Citizen's Advice Bureau (CAB), will be holding an information event in Bedford town centre on Wednesday 23rd October: 9.00am - 3.00pm in the Howard Centre, outside TK Maxx, where anyone who visits can get practical tips and advice on reducing their energy bills through measures such as installing cavity wall or loft insulation as well as switching energy suppliers.
Lib Dem Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: "The cost of energy bills is a real concern for many residents and therefore we are keen to do all we can to help.
"There are many ways you can reduce your energy usage which will reduce your bills and the aim of this information event is to help local residents understand their options and where to get help that is available to them."
With the average fuel bill now £1,400 and with the cost of energy bills on the rise, why not go along to find out how much you could save? There are many different things that you can do to help keep your energy bill as low as possible, and your family warm this winter:
- Contact your current energy supplier to check that you are on the best tariff and payment method for your circumstances, or if they can offer you any discounts to cut your bills.
- Check if there is a better way to pay your bills. Most suppliers offer a discount if you pay by direct debit, on average around £100, compared to paying your bill by cash or cheque.
- You might be able to get a better deal with a new supplier. Visit an accredited switching website to see if you could get your energy cheaper.
- Try to keep the temperature of your living room at the recommend temperature of 70°F/ 21°C.
- Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows and fit draught-proofing to seal any gaps around windows and doors to stop heat escaping.
- Installing the recommended depth of loft insulation (270mm or 10 inches) in a loft with no insulation could reduce your annual fuel bill by up to £180 (£25 saving if there is already 100mm in the loft).
- Insulating the cavity walls of your home will keep the heat in your home and could reduce your fuel bill by up to £140 a year.
