New proposals are being put forward to have an American-style Mayor for Bedford. However, the Bedford Liberal Democrats Party believe there is a hidden danger. An American style mayor system of government would:
- Centralise too much power into the hands of just one person
- Make it harder to change the leader less than every 4 years
- Allow the Mayor to override all the other councillors
- Weaken your local area's representatives
Liberal Democrats want to see the council's power brought nearer to local communities not centralised. We want to see new Area Committees and Parish Councils to be allowed to make local decisions locally - not remotely in the Town Hall.
If a Mayor system is chosen your ward will lose its powerful voice through its Lib Dem councillors. The councillors will not have as much opportunity to get the things done for your area that local people want.
