Scrapping Single-Use Plastic at the Council
We have all seen the images of the harm done to wildlife and our environment by plastics waste that have increasingly appeared in the media in recent times. We all know of the damage it does, yet there is still an obscene amount of unnecessary plastic waste across our society.
The Liberal Democrats have resolved to ensure Bedford Borough Council does its bit to tackle this environmental blight, by announcing our commitment to become a single-use plastics free council by the end of 2020.
Some time ago Mayor Dave Hodgson and his team asked officers to investigate how far we can go to minimise plastic waste. We have been able to resolve that we will rid the Council of all single-use plastics, across all of its activities.
We've already slashed our carbon footprint by over 40%, and have transformed the Council's performance on environmental matters such as energy conservation, overall waste reduction and tackling littering.
We want to match our success across these other areas to ensure the Council's own house is in order over unnecessary plastic waste. Part of our commitment will also involve working with schools, businesses and others to promote the importance of action on this issue.
