I hope the 6th Form Art Exhibition, the first of which I launched today, will become an annual feature in the calendar

This morning I launched the inaugural 6th Form Art Exhibition in the Town Hall Foyer. As Chair of Governors at John Bunyan Upper School I know how much effort goes into preparing for exam exhibitions on the part of students and teachers. Knowing that Schools are showing their work to examiners and parents at a similar time, I had the idea that there is an opportunity for the work of the Borough's talented young artists to be showcased more widely and for members of the wider community to enjoy it. The 6th Form Art Exhibition in the Town Hall is one in which the Council can help grasp this opportunity.

I met with Heads of Art from the Upper Schools some months ago and discussed my idea with them, and they were very happy to help talented students keen to have their work put on display. The Council has also been helping to publicise the public showings of work by 6th Form Art Students in Upper Schools and has badged up the events as 'Art Month.' The Council website has carried pictures of some of the art works from the various schools, as well as links to school website. I hope that in future years this event will grow with, for example, spin-off events and further town centre exhibitions.

It was a pleasure to meet one of the young artists whose work is being being displayed in the Town Hall exhibition at this morning's launch. Lara Wood from Wootton Upper School is clearly very talented and I'm not surprised members of her family, who were also in attendance, are so proud of her!
