Spate of Drain Cover thefts hits Dover Crescent area

6 Mar 2008

The Dover Crescent area of Putnoe was hit by a spate of drain cover thefts over the weekend, causing a serious hazard for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists.

Commenting on the issue, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Putnoe Ward Myrtle Stewardson said:

"The people who have stolen these covers are putting people's safety at risk. We already know of one person who has been injured thanks to the greed and selfishness of these thieves. More accidents are inevitable if this spate of thefts continues.'

"It is essential that they are stopped immediately. We have already been in touch with the police to help bring an end to this dangerous crime."

Drain covers have been stolen in Dover Crescent, Devizes Avenue, Bewcastle Close and Helmsley Avenue. On Monday morning the council moved to protect residents using temporary covers and cones.
