St Mary's Street Update - Now Open in Both Directions

I'm pleased to confirm that St Mary's Street is now open in both directions, as work continues on the major scheme to reconstruct the road after a survey revealed it was at risk of collapsing. The works will continue for up to another three weeks at most, during which it will continue to be at a reduced capacity (i.e. one lane open in each direction). However, it's great to be able to report that vehicles can now travel north over the Town Bridge, which will ease some of the pressure on our road network and help residents in going about their day-to-day business.

Clearly the works have made things difficult in terms of increased congestion, and as I've written before, sadly these works were simply unavoidable due to the very real risk that the road could collapse. I want to thank all those involved in keeping this major project on schedule, and above all thank residents, businesses and all road users for their patience as we work to get these vital works completed as soon as possible and make the road safe for all.

Traffic will be running on a temporary road surface for now, with raised ironworks and motorists are asked to take care. One lane will remain closed at all times as work continues to rebuild the road alongside moving traffic.

I should also note that after the full closure of the road yesterday to enable today's opening of two-way traffic, there are further full closures scheduled for the 20th and 27th of this month. These will allow further works to be carried out to theDuck Mill Lane junction, laying the final surfaces on the carriageway as well as installing road marking and traffic loops, with the second closure intended to mark the final culmination of the project.

I have my fingers tightly crossed that any torrential rain or freezing temperatures stay well away, as I am of course reminded that the works are weather dependent.
