Stopping speeding not a priority for Council
Councillors at Thursday’s Environment Overview and Scrutiny Committee were horrified to hear that some speed cameras in the Borough were no longer operational.
Cllr Charles Royden, Liberal Democrat Environment spokesperson, commented, ‘This is appalling. Cameras keep communities safe. That is the bottom line. The Council has known about 3G issues with their cameras for over six months and has only now admitted that some cameras have been serving as nothing more than useless ornaments.’
‘The previous Liberal Democrat Mayor installed dozens of average speed cameras across the Borough transforming communities for the better and keeping people safe. In opposition the Conservatives said more should be installed but now in power they have not only failed to deliver more cameras they have also failed to maintain the existing cameras. It is a disgrace that so many cameras are now out of action but sadly not unexpected because this administration, like the cameras, is just not working.’
‘Road safety and speeding are consistently some of the most important issues mentioned to me by residents on the doorstep. Why won’t the Conservative Mayor ensure that these cameras are fixed quickly? It’s not as if he is spending the money on new cameras elsewhere, there has only been one pair of speed cameras installed by this administration since they took office.’
‘The Mayor is so keen to buy a bank building with no clear plan, but somehow forgets about vital road safety measures which provide reassurance to our residents.’
