With a number of events taking place this week to help mark Love Your Local Market week, Mayor Dave Hodgson has encouraged people to get along and enjoy Bedford's markets, both this week and throughout the year.

On Tuesday 31st May, stalls were available free of charge to market stall holders old and new, with new starters offered a 50% discount for the rest of the week.

Along with the usual mix of markets, the 'Handmade in Town' craft stalls are attending for the rest of the week through to Saturday 4th June. There will also be children's fairground rides in Harpur Square.

In addition Ark Farm, an education and mobile farm, will be in the town centre on Friday 3rd June from 11am-5pm. Ark Farm delivers a real hands on tactile learning experience for children of all ages through interaction with a number of farm animals.

Commenting, Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "Bedford's Markets have been an important part of the town for 850 years. With footfall in Bedford town centre continuing to increase, our markets bring added vibrancy and colour to the town.'

"There's a lot going on during Love Your Local Market week and we want to encourage people to get along and enjoy Bedford's markets during this event, and throughout the year."

Bedford's markets date back to 1166, when King Henry II awarded the town its Royal Charter, and allowed Bedfordians to hold their own market.

Bedford Markets take place throughout the year, as follows:

Wednesday and Saturday: Charter Markets

Thursday: Gourmet Food Market

Thursday: Kempston General Market

Friday: Home & Garden Market
