The Davis Cup - the 'World Cup of Men's Tennis' - will be on display in Bedford tomorrow!

The trophy was lifted by the Great Britain team in November 2015 following their victory over Belgium in the final. The win was Great Britain's first Davis Cup victory in 79 years.

Everyone is invited to see the trophy in Russell Park (opposite the Butterfly Bridge) from 10am to 2pm on Tuesday 17th May. There will also be 'come and try tennis' sessions on Longholme Meadow and in Russell Park. Refreshments will be available at the Kiosk at the Park.

Mayor Dave Hodgson will be attending the event, and said: "The Davis Cup is the World Cup of men's tennis, and it's fantastic that we are able to host the trophy here in Bedford. I hope that lots of local people who are able to get along on the day do so, and that this occasion helps encourage people of all ages to pick up a racket."

"We have numerous free public courts available locally for anyone to give tennis a try, in addition to a number of excellent clubs around the Borough. With the warmer weather arriving, there's every reason to give tennis a try, and hopefully this exciting occasion will inspire more people to do so."

Local schools have also been invited to come and see the trophy and students who have not played tennis before will be encouraged to sign up for the Davis Cup Legacy programme at the Riverside Tennis Club in Bedford. The programme is part of a National Scheme aiming to give out 10,000 rackets to a new generation of players.

The Davis Cup Legacy Programme is running on Wednesdays and Sundays after the June Half Term and throughout autumn 2016. Follow the link to find out more - www.lta.org.uk/daviscuplegacy
