Responding to the Public Accounts Committee's report 'Delivering STEM skills for the economy', member of the Committee, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson and former teacher, Layla Moran said:
"It's clear from this report that the Government is woefully ill-prepared for the disastrous impact that Brexit is going to have on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths skills. "This adds to what we already knew - that there have been no serious attempts to provide decent, independent careers advice from an early age to ensure that young people, and especially girls, embrace STEM subjects. It is truly woeful that only 8% of STEM apprenticeships are taken up by women. "The Government have already been forced into lifting visa caps for specialist medical staff, researchers and tech specialists. They must now get a grip on their failing STEM skills strategy and provide decent careers advice at a young age, do much more to recruit and retain teachers in these subject areas, and implement sensible immigration policies to meet the skills shortfall across the UK." |
