Tory Poll Gloom

8 Oct 2002

The Liberal Democrats have received a strong boost in the week before the Bedford Mayoral Election. An ICM opinion poll published in Sunday’s News of the World showed Liberal Democrat support equal with the Conservatives at 24%.

In Bedford, the Liberal Democrats came second to the Tories across the Borough in May and are the main challengers, with Labour trailing third. Liberal Democrat candidate for Bedford Mayor Christine McHugh is campaigning on "The Three Zeros". Christine is campaigning for better services for local people, a fair deal on council tax and real environmental protection - reinforcing the Lib Dems position as the greenest of the main political parties.

Campaign Organiser Colin Ross is pleased with the way the campaign is going.

Colin said:

"Across Bedford, it's been clear for a long time that only the Liberal Democrats could beat the Tories in this election. The news of the Tories poll meltdown couldn't come at a better time for us. Locally, the Tories are hopelessly split between backing at least THREE candidates. With a united team, an excellent candidate and a strong manifesto, the Lib Dem team is looking for a great result next Thursday."
