Bedford Borough Council is asking vulnerable groups and those self-isolating to pay their Council Tax over the phone or online instead of paying it in person.

Residents who normally pay their Council Tax at the Post Office or at a Payzone shop are being advised to use a different method of payment, if possible, particularly if they are in vulnerable groups - e.g. the over 70's and those self-isolating - and are concerned about going out to make a payment.

Residents can call the Council's telephone payment service to pay their Council Tax on 01234 718061 (24 hours a day) or visit www.bedford.gov.uk/payments. Residents can also setup a direct debit to pay their Council Tax by calling 01234 718097.

Mayor Dave Hodgson said, "We want people to feel safe and not go out if they don't absolutely have to during these challenging times we find ourselves in.

"There are many ways residents can pay their Council Tax; over the phone, by direct debit or home banking and now may be a good opportunity to make a change.'

"At this crucial time, it is very important that those who can pay their Council Tax continue to do so, to support the important services in our community. Council services are under huge pressure, working to deliver care for the vulnerable and elderly, and keeping vital day-to-day operations running.'

"Anyone having difficulty paying their Council Tax should contact one of our trained advisors who will be able to help."

If your circumstances have changed and you think you will be eligible for Council Tax Support you can fill in an online form on the Council's website at www.bedford.gov.uk/counciltaxsupport. If you are having immediate difficulty paying your Council Tax bill, get in touch with the Council on 01234 718097 or email LocalTaxation@bedford.gov.uk.
