Waging War on Weeds!

On of the effects of the the unusual spring and summer weather has been unwelcome, vigorous weed growth in locations across Bedford Borough. The periods of heavy rain during what was our wettest recorded period in history not only caused excessive weed growth but also caused significant disruption to the Council's annual weed killing programme. That's why we're declaring 'War on Weeds' to fight back against this blight in our local neighbourhoods.

The gritting quad bike, which we purchased to enable more extensive gritting of footpaths last winter, has been adapted to allow it to put down weed killer, improving the coverage that can be achieved. We also have Council staff working extra time on a more extensive programme than ever to tackle the weed growth. The new capacity provided by the gritting quad bike is in addition to the use of trained staff armed with backpacks and spraying lances.

Excessive weed growth has been a problem across the country but we are confident these extra efforts are making a real difference in the fight back against this blight. We have already treated significant parts of the borough but the work is ongoing as we continue to tackle the unprecedented weed growth.
