Watford Executive Mayor Visits Bedford

11 Sep 2002

On Monday the first Executive Mayor of Watford visited Christine McHugh in Bedford. Dorothy Thornhill, Lib Dem Executive Mayor of Watford gave her backing for Christine's campaign to be Bedford's first Executive Mayor.

Christine McHugh said:

"Dorothy Thornhill was elected in May to be Mayor of Watford. During her visit to Bedford I took her to see some of the issues we are campaigning on, particularly my three pledges - zero tolerance of neglect, zero council tax rise and zero waste. Bedford and Watford face some similar challenges, such as town centre parking and vandalism. In Watford they are setting up a dedicated graffiti-cleaning squad as I would do."

"Dorothy was able to give an insight into her winning campaign in Watford and gave us her full backing to repeat that victory here in Bedford Borough."

Dorothy Thornhill was one of the first group of new Executive Mayors elected this May. The Liberal Democrats were previously second in Watford, but went on to win the Mayoral contest.
