Western Bypass Project Update: Swift Progress, and Planned Closure this Weekend
The rapid progress of the construction of the crucial final section of the Bedford Western Bypass is continuing, with the roundabout at its western end on Bromham Road at Deep Spinney near completion.
The vital project to construct the road, which is taking place after Mayor Dave Hodgson's success in clearing the barriers which had blocked its development, commenced in the autumn, and is due to be complete in the first half of 2016. The project is approaching a major milestone with the completion of the roundabout, which is being increased in size hugely in order to accommodate the traffic which will be using the new route. Completion of the roundabouts requires weekend closures at the location along Bromham Road, starting this weekend, from 6am on Saturday 25th April through to 8pm on 26th April.
Regular users of the route will be well aware of the advertised closure, which will be well-signposted over the weekend, while for more information and a map indicating diversion arrangements, see the dedicated webpages on the Council's website
Mayor Dave Hodgson recently had a tour of the huge construction site, which the picture here shows was already taking shape earlier this year, and photos of his visit will soon be available on Mayor Dave's Facebook page.
Works are ahead of schedule, with a number of milestones already reached, including the completion of a pedestrian underpass at Deep Spinney. The underpass, which provides access across the major route for pedestrians and cyclists, has now been completed and is protected by stone cladding, allowing progress on the roundabout to continue.
Commenting, Mayor Dave Hodgson said: "It's fantastic to see rapid progress of this vital infrastructure project for Bedford Borough. However, the unavoidable planned closures will inevitably cause some disruption, and I encourage everyone who might be using the affected route to take note of the diversion information, and thank motorists for their patience as the final stages of this section of this essential project are completed."
The dates of the planned closures and diversions around the Deep Spinney / Bromham Road area are:
- 25th - 26th April, from 6am on Saturday until 8pm Sunday
- 1st - 3rd May, from 8pm on Friday until 8pm on Sunday
- 8th - 10th May, from 8pm on Friday until 8pm on Sunday
