Women's Tour to Provide a Superb Spectacle of Sport on Streets of Bedford Borough
The inaugural Women's Tour Cycle race is coming to Bedford Borough in just over a week's time, and Mayor Dave Hodgson has predicted that it will provide a 'stunning, free spectacle of world class sport.'
The Women's Tour is Britain's first ever international stage race for women, and Bedford Borough is hosting the conclusion of stage two of the event on Thursday May 8th. The world's very best cyclists are competing, with four reigning Olympic Champions included amongst those set to race through local streets before a sprint finish on the Embankment in Bedford.
In addition to the race itself, the day will see selected school students given the chance to cycle along the finishing straight in the morning, while a Cycle Market Place will take place on St Paul's Square, providing an excellent opportunity for all-comers to find out more about cycling.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: "In just over a week's time the world's best female cyclists will be racing through the streets of Bedford Borough.
"The sight of elite cyclists racing along local roads before a sprint finish along The Embankment will provide a stunning, free spectacle of world class sport.
"The buzz created on the day will be enhanced by the community events and activities taking place, with a Cycle Market Place on St Paul's Square and opportunities for young people and cycling enthusiasts to get involved."
The Women's Tour starts on Wednesday 7th May in Oundle, Northamptonshire. Day two starts in Hinckley in Leicestershire and travels south, ending the day in Bedford Borough. The riders are expected to arrive in the north of the borough shortly after 1pm and will finish on The Embankment shortly after 2pm.
