Works to St Mary's Garden Now Underway
Works to improve the river walk between Prebend Street and Town Bridge are now underway.
The project includes a new footpath, grass embankment, lighting and the planting of 31 new semi mature Tulip trees along the south bank of the River Great Ouse.
The work is expected be completed this spring, meaning St Mary's Gardens will be reopened in time for visitors to make the most of the new walk during the better weather.
Lib Dem Councillor Sarah-Jayne Holland, Portfolio Holder for Community and Regulatory Services, said: "The River Great Ouse is a much loved part of Bedford Borough and we are committed to maintaining and improving it.
"These works will create a beautiful river walk with a grass embankment, smooth pavement, new lighting as well as healthy and stunning trees, in the heart of Bedford."
Surveys found the Horse Chestnut trees previously in place along this stretch of the river were seriously affected by pest and diseases such as leaf minor and in particular, bleeding canker and were in need of replacement.
The first stage of the works are now underway and include the removal of the strip of tarmac alongside the river wall, the installation of a tree root barrier and the creation of the tree pits. This will enable trees to begin to be planted in February.
In order to protect the public, St Mary's Gardens will be closed between Town Bridge and Borough Hall while the works take place.
