"You Can Leave Your Cap On" and Recycle More!
Bedford Borough Council is launching a campaign to encourage local residents to recycle the aluminium screw tops along with their glass bottles.
The campaign has been designed to increase the recycling of aluminium screw tops and collars by encouraging people to screw the tops back onto the empty glass bottles before dropping the bottle and the top off at one of the many recycling bottle banks located throughout the borough. They are then taken away together before being separated for recycling.
The campaign highlights the importance of recycling the aluminium closures as, like all aluminium and glass packaging they are 100% recyclable; so every screw top and bottle deposited in a bottle bank can be transformed into something new, including more bottles, drink cans, mobile phones and even cars.
Lib Dem Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: "We are committed to reducing the amount of waste needlessly sent to landfill and this includes encouraging local residents to recycle as much as possible.
"Although screw tops are very small their recycling potential is enormous. The vast majority of screw tops are made from aluminium which means they can be recycled over and over again!
"Local residents can recycle even more by screwing the top back onto the empty bottle and dropping it in their local bottle bank."
