More Progress Towards Sustainable Solution on Gypsy and Traveller Sites as Meadow Lane Application Approved

This week's Council Planning Committee meeting was a busy one, as they often are. I'm not involved at all in determining planning applications, with planning being a 'regulatory' function of the council, rather than an 'executive' function, which are those I have responsibility for as Mayor. I was pleased to be informed on Monday night of good news for the Borough with regard to a number of applications.

Opening the Superb New Library Facility at Lincroft School

Getting out to schools around the Borough and talking to the staff and the children is without doubt one of the most enjoyable parts of the job of Mayor, and this week I had the honour of opening new library facilities at Lincroft School in Oakley. The new facilities will be a superb boost for the pupils, and it is clear that a lot of careful planning has gone into making sure they bring maximum benefit. As the School itself says, the library is the heart of the school. The library was obviously very well-stocked with books, magazines and of course IT equipment, and it is clear that as at schools across the Borough, at Lincroft Middle they are helping the children to enjoy their library and to really get the most from it (and to see it as so much more than somewhere they are forced to hang around in during wet break times, which is how some adults apparently remember their school library!).

Day Centre Users' Dry Car Wash Cleans Up!

Yesterday morning I was very lucky to have my car 'dry washed' by a new team made up of learning disabled users of the Council's Adult day centre services. They've done a great job, and there was not a hosepipe in sight! This is a service which is currently being trialled, and it is hoped to be launched publicly soon, so keep an eye out for more information. As I say, they've certainly done a fine job on my Smart car! The dry wash is obviously very timely in the current circumstances, with the hosepipe ban in place, and is very environmentally friendly. The service they offered was great, and I'm sure it will prove popular when it is up and running.

Mock-up of Bedford Borough bus smart card

Coming Soon: Bedford Borough's Oyster Card!

In the coming months we will be introducing a 'smart card' ticketing system for the bus network across Bedford Borough. The system will work on a similar basis to the Oyster Card in London, allowing local residents to add credit to their smart card when it suits them, online for example, and simply scan it when they get on a local bus.

Replacement riverside footbridge is welcome, but wait is far too long

The confirmation from Network Rail that it will replace the riverside path footbridge it removed over the railway line near Prebend Street in Bedford is welcome, especially in light of its initial intention to provide no alternative to the existing underpass, which is prone to flooding and has a notoriously low height clearance of 4 feet 9 inches. The previous footbridge was removed as part of the Bedford element of the important Thameslink Programme improvements to allow for 12-carriage trains, and Network Rail's original approach was to claim that the existing underpass was sufficient for path users and no replacement crossing was required. We objected and after a process of negotiation it accepted our argument that this would represent a loss of a public right of way, and responded with plans to create a new path and underpass with a greater height clearance. Following survey works, Network Rail has now confirmed that they will construct a replacement footbridge instead, with visually striking spiral ramps
