Bedford Borough Lib Dems Announce Drive to Freeze Council Tax

Bedford Borough Lib Dems have announced that the Council is aiming for a council tax freeze next year. The announcement follows two years of below-inflation increases in Bedford Borough after the Council inherited the country's second highest level of County Council tax from the Conservative-run County Council in April 2009. It also comes after the Chancellor of the Exchequer announced today that the Government will work with Councils to deliver a Council tax freeze.

Concerned Over Police Merger Plans

I am very concerned by the plans to merge Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Police Forces. As will be even more evident after today's emergency budget, tough decisions lie ahead for all public sector organisations, including the police, and Bedford Borough residents could lose out if those decisions are taken more remotely.

Mayor Dave Hodgson Challenges Police Chiefs Over Merger Plans

Mayor Dave Hodgson has warned Chief Constable Gillian Parker and Police Authority Chair Peter Conniff that concerns of Bedford Borough residents must not be swept aside in a headlong rush to merge the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Police Forces. The Police Chiefs delivered a briefing to the Mayor and to Bedford Borough Councillors about future plans last week and made clear their belief that the forces should be merged. Mayor Dave Hodgson, however, challenged the plans and said that residents would lose out if the tough decisions that need to be taken over local policing in their community are made more remotely.

The Swoop may sound like a harmless enough name for an attraction, but it involves a jumping off a building 110 feet up and travelling at over 35 miles per hour along a 200 feet zip wire to the ground (http://www.bodyflight.co.uk/facilities/swoop.html) . It certainly beats a cup of coffee as a morning 'pick-me-up!'

Mayor Dave Hodgson conducts the 'Pints in the Parishes' draw

Full 'Pints in the Parishes' Schedule

Having received an excellent response from Parish Councils after inviting them to nominate a local pub as a venue for one of the monthly 'Pints in the Parishes' events, I had to conduct a draw to identify at random the pubs I will be visiting. The first event at the Swan in Elstow was an extremely useful way of finding out the concerns and ideas of residents in an informal setting, and I am looking forward to the rest of the schedule, which is now confirmed.
