Winter is certainly here! To help residents, Bedford Borough Council is working with local partners to develop a Warm Spaces network. Warm Spaces provide somewhere people can go to stay warm and maybe enjoy some company and a hot drink, or simply spend time reading a magazine or book.
On the 100th anniversary earlier in December of women being able to stand as MPs, Mayor Dave Hodgson was invited to unveil a new blue plaque in honour of Amy Walmsley, the renowned educationalist and pioneering politician.
Bedford Town Centre's record of bucking the trend in the face of the crisis for UK High Streets was the focus of a report on BBC Look East last night. In his introductino, the newsreader declares that Bedford is 'the High Street fighting back against out-of-town stores and the internet'. The report includes the facts and figures which illustrate how Bedford has increased footfall in contrast to the national trend of falling numbers of visitors to high streets, and features comments from Mayor Dave Hodgson, seen here during his interview in The Arcade.
Commenting on yesterday's Budget delivered by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mayor Dave Hodgson has noted that the claim that 'austerity is over' has proven to be simply not true, and called on the government to cut out the spin and reverse the ongoing cuts for local services.
