In a stranger than usual public event held in the Changing Places accessible public toilet in River Street Car Park, two further toilets in Bedford were twinned, bringing the total to more than 20 in supporting Bedford Park Rotary Club's Toilet Twinning campaign, highlighting sanitation needs and improving sanitation across the globe. Following on from the recent opening of a brand new medical centre at the popular Church Lane Development, Mayor Dave Hodgson joined local Liberal Democrat Ward Councillors and others to mark more good news for the site recently, as works began on the construction of a new Iceland store. The new store is being constructyed at the oppostie end of the redeveloped site from the Aldi store, and will be open as early as this summer.
I am very concerned by the plans to merge Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Police Forces. As will be even more evident after today's emergency budget, tough decisions lie ahead for all public sector organisations, including the police, and Bedford Borough residents could lose out if those decisions are taken more remotely.
The building work on the exciting redevelopment of the Council's Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum got underway last week. This £6 million project will help to revitalise the heart of Bedford's cultural quarter, and make the art gallery and museum more attractive to both local residents and visitors to Bedford. The redeveloped facilities will include new galleries, allowing more of the world class collections to be on display at any one time, and a shop and cafe. Not only will we be able to vastly improve what's on offer to visitors, but we're also managing to reduce the ongoing running costs for local taxpayers through a range of actions including making the buildings more efficient and sustainable and providing new space for corporate hire.
