COVID spike in schools: Government missing in action

Commenting on a COVID-19 update at a meeting of Children's Services Overview and Scrutiny Committee, Chair of the committee Councillor Hilde Hendrickx said "Whilst we expected figures to rise as students returned to school, these figures are very high and they are worrying. At the start of the school year the Department of Education told schools not to continue with COVID safety measures such as wearing facemasks and operating in bubbles. In spite of the surge in cases, the government still just seems to be standing by and our schools have received very little guidance. In addition, only a small percentage of the 300,000 carbon dioxide monitors the government promised to schools as part of the drive to improve ventilation, has been delivered."

Mayor Dave Hodgson with Tomasz Marszalek at the 70th Anniversary of The Polish Club in Bedford

Bedford's Polish Club: Club Founded by Heroes Marks its 70th Birthday

Bedford's Polish Club, or Klub Polski, on Alexandra Road celebrated its 70th Anniversary last week at a special event which recognised the rich contribution of the club across its history to community life. Mayor Dave Hodgson gave a speech at the event which highlighted the club's origins, having been founded by men who had served with the Allied Forces in World War II and who settled in Bedford as they were unable to return home to Poland due to Soviet occupation. The original members included, amongst others, veterans of II Corps of the Polish Army and also members of 303 Squadron, which had a major involvement in the Battle of Britain.

Bedford Borough misses out on GPs due to lack of funding for surgeries

The Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes Integrated Care Board (BLMK ICB) have admitted that the BLMK area has missed out on eight trainee GPs because the area, including Bedford Borough, lacks sufficient space within its GP estate. Some of the proposed expansions to GP provisions in Wootton, Wixams, Shortstown, Harrold and Queen's Park will now not be funded because of government infrastructure policy that is failing Bedford Borough residents.

End for Council Magazine in further £45,000 Saving from Council PR

One of my early decisions as mayor was to cut the cost of the Council magazine 'Borough News,' halving the number of editions to 6 a year and making delivery cheaper and wider-reaching across the whole borough. This produced a major saving for the taxpayer, while improving the design, content and reach of the magazine in order to make it more useful for local residents. I hear a range of views about Borough News from residents, some from people who like to receive it, others who feel it is a waste of money. Personally, while I can see its purpose and have worked to make it more useful and cost effective, in the current climate resources must be directed to the front line to protect services while keeping tax down. We are therefore now going further and stopping the magazine altogether in order to communicate with residents in more cost effective ways.

Redevelopment Underway at Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum

The building work on the exciting redevelopment of the Council's Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Bedford Museum got underway last week. This £6 million project will help to revitalise the heart of Bedford's cultural quarter, and make the art gallery and museum more attractive to both local residents and visitors to Bedford. The redeveloped facilities will include new galleries, allowing more of the world class collections to be on display at any one time, and a shop and cafe. Not only will we be able to vastly improve what's on offer to visitors, but we're also managing to reduce the ongoing running costs for local taxpayers through a range of actions including making the buildings more efficient and sustainable and providing new space for corporate hire.
